The MCU Iron Man 2 - Spoilers ahead (duh!)

Based on an interesting conversation with my friends last night, I decided to rewatch all the Marvel movies based on the phrases. I skipped the first Iron Man because I didn’t feel the need to rewatch. I am now reconsidering that.

When I started the movie last night, I was just watching for entertainment and to see if I could now pick out hints. I am proud to say, yes I can.

I am very aware I am not the first person to ever do this. I just enjoy how complicated the MCU is and love to analyze it as much as possible. I actually prefer to watch youtube videos about it. A lot of things go over my head and I love how much work people put into analyzing movies and clues.

My mind has always been blown by how creative and organized someone has to be to create the entire MCU and all the different universes and characters and their personalities in the different universes. I also love the history incorporated into the Marvel Universe because of the authors applied real life situations to the universe. The idea was what if we had superheros during this time.

Iron Man 2 begins in Russia with Ivan watching his father die. Ivan is the villain in Iron Man 2. When we consider when the Iron Man character was introduced in the comics, it makes sense why the villain is Russian.

Iron Man was introduced in the comics in 1963. By this time, the Cold War had been going on almost two decades. Of course, the Cold War was a war between the then Soviet Union and the United States. At the time, the world was watching two global superpowers go head to head. In a time, when the Red Scare was alive and feeding into the fears of the average US citizen... in no way do I mean to imply the Red Scare ended. The Red Scare started over a century ago and continues to have its hold on us. The Red Scare was directly related to communism and the idea that it would creep its way into the United States.

Reflecting back, let's talk about the name Iron Man... when we think about what America was producing during this time, we were in the steel game. In the 1920s, we were producing 40 percent of the world's supply of iron and steel. Think Pittsburgh Steelers, established in 1933. Think Bethlehem Steel, established in 1857. Think Mad Men when Bethlehem Steel is introduced and Don Draper pitches for them. "Cities are made of steel, Bethlehem Steel." Mad Men took place in the 1960s.

Why not Steel man? Well, steel is made of iron. Of course, the comics make it simple. The original suit was made of iron, so he was called Iron Man.

We can analyze like English teachers all day and I will, but I think there was more going on here than a simple decision, even if this wasn't in the mind of the writers at the time.

Below is a list of timestamps and key moments of the movie.

Timestamp 16:05

Tony pulls up a video of Justin Hammer testing an wannabe Iron Man suit...Hammer claims the man inside the suit survived...maybe for 10 minutes after the video.

I am going to leave it there because MCU is vast and complicated.

Thank you for reading,
